Wadena City Council approves hiring of Janette Bower as new city administrator

Janette Bower will be taking over the administration of the Wadena City Government May 29 replacing Brad Swenson, who has held the job since 1988.

Swenson, who has worked for the city more than 43 years, was a clerk and the city finance director prior to taking over the administrator's position.

Bower graduated from Magic City High School in Minot, N.D. in 1983 and attended the Griffen Business College of Tacoma, Wash. in 1987.

Bower agreed with Swenson that a strong accounting background is important for a city administrator position, but added her own thoughts as well.

"Being able to talk to people and get together with groups of people to discuss things is important and being pretty flexible," Bower said.

Bower has been serving as the city administrator of Menahga since 2016. Prior to taking her Menahga position, she worked in a variety of city government positions for 16 years in the Alaskan communities of Palmer and Bethel.

"I'm excited about it," Bower said. "There will be new challenges with a bigger community. There are a lot of projects going on right now, and it will be fun to be a part of that as well."

Bower's hiring was approved unanimously by the city council.

Swenson told the council he would be helping Bower learn the job during the month of June. Bower will be starting with a yearly salary of $81,723.20.

"I actually met her over a year ago at a joint meeting held at the Wellness Center," Mayor George Deiss said. "I was very impressed with her that day, with her resume and references, and I am looking forward to working with her."
