Park Rapids concludes regular season with sweep
The Park Rapids 18U fastpitch softball team concluded the regular season by sweeping a Prairies Lakes Conference doubleheader at Frazee Tuesday night.
Park Rapids used an 11-hit attack to spark an 8-6 win in the first game while Macky Warne's three-hitter led Park Rapids to the sweep with an 8-1 victory in the second game.
In the opener, Kaisa Coborn singled and scored on Katelyn Weaver's grounder for a 1-0 lead in the second inning and Coborn was hit by a pitch and scored on Rilee Michaelson's grounder in the fourth for a 2-1 lead.
After Frazee scored three times in the bottom of that inning to take a 4-2 lead, Park Rapids used a five-run sixth inning to take the lead for good. A single by Natalie Kinkel, an RBI double by Tara Johanning, an RBI single by Warne, a single by Coborn, a two-run triple by Michaelson and an error gave Park Rapids a 7-4 advantage.
Frazee scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to slice the gap to 7-6 while Johanning singled and scored on Warne's grounder in the seventh to conclude the scoring.
Johanning went 3 for 4 with two runs, Coborn went 3 for 3 with three runs and Michaelson had three RBI to lead Park Rapids' offense. Michaelson went the distance, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and seven walks while striking out 10 over seven innings.
Warne's complete game and a four-run fourth inning in the second game sparked Park Rapids to the sweep.
Park Rapids jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kinkel reached on an error and scored on Johanning's RBI double. Johanning later scored on a wild pitch.
Sara Simpson doubled and scored on Shailyn Pachel's grounder to give Park Rapids a 3-0 lead in the second.
After Frazee scored a run in the fourth, Michaelson's solo home run, a walk to Weaver, an error, a two-run double by Kinkel and an RBI single by Johanning gave Park Rapids a 7-1 advantage in the bottom of that frame.
Coborn walked and scored on Weaver's grounder in the fifth to conclude the scoring.
Warne walked three and struck out four over six innings for the win. Kinkel (2 for 3, two runs, two RBI), Johanning (2 for 3, one run, two RBI) and Michaelson (2 for 3) led Park Rapids' seven-hit offensive attack.
Park Rapids, which had to split games with Perham when their postponed games on June 13 couldn't be made up and had to forfeit two games to Detroit Lakes on July 6, ends the regular season with a 7-5 record. The league tournament will be held Monday at Hawley.
