Warroad ends Panthers' season with semifinal win

Monday night's performance in a Section 8A semifinal game against the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team showcased why Warroad is the top-rated team in the state.

The No. 1-seeded Warriors outshot No. 5 Park Rapids 96-2 in posting a 15-0 victory at Warroad. That win sent Warroad back to the section championship game against No. 3 East Grand Forks, which defeated No. 2 Thief River Falls 5-2 in Monday night's other semifinal game. Thief River Falls was rated No. 5 while East Grand Forks was rated No. 8 in the latest state Class A poll. Warroad edged East Grand Forks 3-2 in last year's section championship game.

Warroad took control of this semifinal game from the start, firing 34 shots on net in building an 8-0 lead after the first period. Madison Oelkers, Hannah Corneliusen and Kaitlyn Kotlowski scored two goals apiece with Oelkers and Corneliusen scoring shorthanded goals. Sadie Neist and Tiffani Foster also scored as the Warriors limited Park Rapids to only one shot on goal.

Oelkers and Corneliusen completed their hat tricks while Marlie Johnston and McKenzie Oelkers added goals as the Warriors used a 36-1 advantage in shots to push the lead to 12-0 after the second period.

Kotlowski completed her hat trick while Madison Lavergne and Genevieve Hendrickson added goals in the third period to complete the scoring. Warroad outshot the Panthers 26-0 in the final period.

Warroad, which used a 72-7 advantage in shots to defeat the Panthers 13-0 on Nov. 14, carried a 20-3-2 overall record into the section title game. Goalie Kylee Pachel made 81 saves as the Panthers end the season with a 4-22 record.
